John Carter emigrated from his native England to Virginia before 1626, as a trader representing his family's wine business, and patented land in Jamestown. He married four times, his last marriage in late life and short in duration. His tombstone, located at his seat "Corotoman," Lancaster County, Virginia, where he had removed to, mentions three of his wives whom he had survived: Jane Glynn, Anne Carter and Sarah Ludlow. His fourth marriage, not mentioned, was short and sour. It was to Elizabeth Shirley, to whom he left two books at his death, pointedly mentioning their names, The Whole Duty of Man and David's Tears. He died in 1669, leaving issue, among whom was the child who grew up to be called "King" Carter. John was buried in the north chancel of Christ Church, Lancaster County.
The John Carter file includes information on 9,629 descendants with 1585 different surnames.
