Thomas Garnett emigrated from his native England to Virginia on the ship “Swann” in 1610. He settled in Jamestown where a General Assembly was held in 1619 which included the notorious case concerning Thomas Garnett. As a servant of Captain William Powell, it seems he was accused not only of extreme neglect of his business, but also for wantonness with a woman servant of the Captain Powell’s, as well as even being accused of plotting to murder the Captain. He was condemned by the court to stand four days with his ears nailed to the pillory and to be whipped publicly on each of the four days. He later settled in Elizabeth City County, where he married and left issue.
