Thomas Pettit, IV was born in 1598 and emigrated from either Flanders or France to Virginia about 1638 as commander of the a company of forty soldiers, having been sent over from Flanders or France by Sir Thomas Dale for aid against the Indians. He settled in James City County where he established his estate, "Littleton." His first wife's name is unknown, but she was the children of his children. He married the Widow Durant after the death of his first wife. Colonel Pettit or Pettus, as the name became known in America, was a member of the Virginia Council in 1641 and 1660. He was still living in 1663. He left a will, but the records of James City County having been burned in 1865, we do not have record of it. However, a York County record dated in 1798 refers to the difference between one of his surviving executors, Major Lewis Burwell, and Mr Edmund Berkeley, his grandson, son of Mary Pettus Berkeley Mann. Col. Pettus died sometime after 1663, leaving issue.
