William Ruffin emigrated from his native England in 1635 to Virginia on the ship, Assurance, when he was but eighteen years of age. He married Elizabeth (surname unknown) and they settled in Isle of Wight County and raised their family. Ruffin died intestate there in 1674, his son and heir, Robert, administering on his estate. He was the progenitor of the Virginia and North Carolina Ruffins.
