Lunenburg County, Virginia
Antioch United Methodist Church was built in Lunenburg County in 1857, to replace the old building, a place of camp meetings, which stood across the road, opposite of John Hite's drive.
The land on which this new church was built was deeded to a board of nine trustees that same year: C C Walker, James Hite, Dabney Hardy, Robin Blackwell, William Thweatt Blackwell, Robert Blackwell, Christopher Haskins, William Wilkinson and Benjamin James Wilkinson.
This new Antioch church stood for more than forty years without a single change in its original construction.
The first change made in its appearance was made toward the end of the 19th century, the removal of two windows to allow for the addition of a recess pulpit.
The next change, a more radical one, came about twenty-five years later.
The ceiling was altered and a vestibule added to the front, eliminating any future use of the gallery.
The gallery was where the black people of the community who attended Antioch, worshipped along with, yet separately from, their white neighbors.
Also, at this time, stained memorial windows were installed in the church and five classrooms were added.
Since then, there have been several alterations to the interior of the church, but the current congregations worshipping there today still sit on the original pews, though they have been comfortably cushioned.
Among the congregation of today, there are many descendants of the said nine trustees.
Following are short sketches of each.
1)C C Walker - I could find no information on this trustee, except that in a letter written by Robert E Blackstone that he had been told by his father, Robert A Blackstone (youngest and last living among the trustees) that the said Walker had moved away.
I could not find him among the households listed in the 1850 Federal census of Lunenburg County, either.
But, perhaps he, as Col. Christopher Haskins, was from another adjacent county.
2) James Land Hite was the son of William Land Hite, Sr and Elizabeth S Mitchell, of Mecklenburg County, and grandson of Julius J Hite and Agnes Land, of "Oakgrove," Lunenburg County, Virginia.
He married twice, to two daughters of Robert Moore, Jr and Elizabeth James Simmons, of Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
He married his first wife, Martha H Moore, on April 2, 1844, and on March 23, 1845, she was delivered of his firstborn son, Charles Fletcher Hite.
Martha died less than nine months later, on December 9, 1845.

Mary Jane died during the birth of Robert, her ninth child, on April 24, 1864.
James died from dysentery while serving in the Confederate army during the Civil War, less than four months later, on August 15, 1864.
Margaret S Moore, sister of Martha H and Mary Jane Moore, and fourth and last daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Moore, never married.
She resided at the home of James Land Hite and raised his and Mary Jane's children.
Charles Fletcher, the eldest son of James, by his first wife, died from a fall down the stairs the day before his seventh birthday.
James Land Hite owned two farms in Lunenburg County, one, no doubt, the farm left him by his grandfather, Julius J Hite, which was probably the one with the outlet across from the old camp church.
His other farm was located across from Brickland, the Neblett plantation.
