Letter from Edwin to his uncle and aunt (His mother [Sallie Hite] was the sister of Henry Hite and his Henry's wife, Pattie, was the sister of his father, Gus) The first page of the letter is, unfortunately, missing.
"I don't, some time during the day, think of one or all three of you [by three, he is including their only son, William]. It is only natural that one would live to some extent in the past and of course it would be impossible for me to think much about my boyhood days without thinking about 'Aunt Pattie and Uncle Henry'. Next to my own mother and father you two had more to do with the shaping of my life than anyone else. That is whatever good there may be in me, both of you had something to do with putting it there. As to the bad, well I don't know where it came from but it could not be justly charged to you, and neither could it have come from Mamma or Papa. I often think of the old 'Horny and Butty' days as the happiest of my life. They seem to blend together with the pleasant thoughts of coming to your house or almost living there in those days.
A lot of water has run down Stoney and Flat Rock Creeks since that time but nothing has happened to reduce my fondness for that same visit. The unfortunate part of it is that due to the works of the devil our visits to any place are reduced to almost nil as we don't have the tires or gas. I'm sure that you will agree that the terrible war that we are trying to endure was caused by none other than the devil himself. That much evil and destruction of lives and property could come from no other source. In spite of everything though we are going to do our very best to see you this spring. Mildred, Betty and I have been talking about it a long time. It depends a great deal on my progress in getting two new tires. Don't look for us though until we write you.
Of course I can't remember much abuot it but I am told that forty two years ago tonight the institution now known as Blackstone College burned to the ground. I don't imagine Mamma or Papa took much interest in the disaster as it was the cold, snowy, stormy night of my arrival. It gives me a very unusual feeling to realize that Papa lived only four years longer than my present age. Yes taken right in the prime of life.
By the way, I am enclosing a check for $10.00 to cover my own and Claude's share of the fence for the grave yard. Be sure and let me know if this is not sufficient. I hope you still have your dependable help on the farm as the manpower problem is certainly a tough one now. Was glad to hear that your crop was good last year. We had a pretty sorry crop on my farm last year due mostly to drought but it sold very good. I have ten cows, four brood sows, one bull and one boar. Pigs are certainly scarce here. I have bred O I C's and they are really in demand. Tell William I have a colt twenty one months old that is said to be a rare combination of sense any style. I wish he could see her.
All three of us have had our share of colds this winter and although each of us still have one, we are otherwise enjoying our usual good health. Hope each of you are well and especially William. Tell him that Edwin says 'He is a brave soldier'. Haven't heard from Mamma and the folks for several weeks. I have a prospect of catching a ride over there in the next few weeks. Hope I can. Got a Birthday card from Annie this A. M. Be sure and give my love to all of the folks and let us hear from you. Betty and Mildred send love. I've been interrupted a good many times. I hope this letter makes sense.
Much love to all,
Your boy,
Edwin {signed}"

14. "Newspaper clipping," "G E McDaniel G E McDaniel, who died last weekend, arrived in Madison during the same week I did in the spring of 1934. Perhaps because we were newcomers, and outsiders, we were immediately thrown together and soon became close friends. We maintained that friendship during the years. Mr McDaniel's death came as a distinct personal loss to me; but, I am confident that I speak for all who knew him, when I say that his passing marked a time of sorrow and loss for the community which he loved. G E McDaniel was a progressive man. He worked constantly for things that would improve Madison. He backed all worthy causes with energy and, during the past few years when he knew that deth was hovering over him, he displayed a fortitude and serentiy that was an inspiration to all who knew him. While his friends grieve his passing, we cannot but be thankful that he dwelt among us for a while and left Madison a better place in which to live because of his countless contributions to the forward progress of our community."
