Letter from Jane Maria (Hatchett) Hite to Charles H Ogburn (Transcribed from a copy in the possession of Gertrude Hite, original in possession of Mrs. John P Hunt of Chatham, Virginia, October, 1980)
White Oaks, May 9, 1843
Mr. Ogburn,
I am very much disappointed by your not coming to see me when you were in the neighborhood. You may say it is well that you were, notwithstanding, I hope you will be over again soon. I have looked for you but alass in vain, you may say why, you had no reason to expect me, but something whispered my Charley will come again. You can't immagine how I have strived to get over that love, thinking that I could not marry the second time. I believe second love is as lasting as the first if not more so, we know better how to appreciate its consoling influence, it is then no romance, it is really so. I have immagined that I could not be happy if I married the second time. I have weighed the matter over & again & find nothing wanting. I feel from what I have seen & heard of you that I would as soon or sooner trust happiness with you than any other man of my whole acquaintance. I feel that you love me, your conduct as ever good to prove it, & no doubt it is surely reciprocated, (you know that) & know also the obsticles that interfeared. I have come to the conclusion that I never will be happy unless I yeild, no doubt the good being has had a hand in it & will have it as he pleases. I have thought that I could not write to you but knowing that you are a particular friend & will not expose my letter, never even mention it, I commenced. If you are unsatisfied any way (I hear that you have been to look at some ladies) I will not think it amiss, for it will be my own fault. I feel that I am writing to an intimate friend that will never divulge the least thing ever passed between us, lovers should be very cautious how they talk about their private matters. I may be very much mistaken in the _________ race not given to much talk. I have heard several reports but never thought they came from you. When I put great confidence in a man, it's hard for me to believe he can do wrong. Well I have written more than I intended. I would fill the whole sheet but am most afraid I'm not very particular in what I'm writing. Sometimes such letters create a great many remarks. I hope sincerely none may be made by this . Perhaps you may be on the eve of moving but it matters not, no doubt you will ever be my friend. I feel assured that you will have a place in my affections let circumstances be as they may. I would like for you to come here the 20th of this month that being Saturday before preaching & you can have an excuse. Bring this letter, I have no desire of your keeping it to show your wife. I expect you are engaged, you recollect the promise no doubt we made when we parted. I shall get Matt Dance to back this letter & put it in the office, he does not know the contents. I have made him believe that I promised to write to you for old acquaintance sake. He believes it firmly, he will no doubt do his best to prevent detection. I should be delighted to receive a letter from you next mail, write & seal it in a separate paper & back it to Matt. My object for doing this is best known to ourselves. New people are so very curious, in this neighborhood it would be known ten miles square in two days who wrote it. I shall tell Matt to keep an eye to the office, it is ever my delight to write to those I love & know will not criticize on my letters. You may construe this letter what you will. I have had my pen in hand several times to write before, but could not gain resolution enough. I have written enough to suffice, I should be happy to see you. Perhaps I shall be called from home, Pa's health improves so slowly we have almost dispared of his recovery, unless he gets worse I shall not go until the first of June. I have written more than I expected, it is nearly dark, I hardly know what sort of letters I make.
I remain as ever yours truly.
             Jane Maria Hite

Notes for SARAH MARGARET ANGELINA OGBURN:
1] Sallie earned for herself the nickname "Spunky Sallie" during carpetbagger days following the War Between the States. The story goes that she was visiting in a neighbor's home one day when she spied Yankee raiders going by with all the slaves belonging to her husband. She forthwith marched out to meet them, unarmed except for her bravado and in no uncertain terms ordered the slaves to, "Go right back home, where you belong, every one of you"! Under such pressure they immediately turned heels and retraced their steps, and the Yankees sheepishly went on their way.
Where was she in 1850, when not in the home of her father and Jane, along with the other children belonging to the two?
